District IV 4-H Livestock Judging

Volunteers:  volunteers are needed to help with the contest – group leader, reasons, etc.  If you are bringing contestants, sign up to help on 4-H Connect (on 4-Her’s registration page)

Eligibility:  Participants MUST be currently enrolled in 4-H through 4-H Connect and pay applicable entry fees for EACH discipline. Participants MUST be academically eligible according to UIL rules to compete on the day of the contest.  Agents please verify 4-H members eligibility prior to approving entries.  

Academic Eligibility of Participants:  According to the Texas Education Code, a 4-H member must be deemed “eligible” to compete in an event that takes place on a weekday or weekend.  All 4-H youth, including youth in public, private, and/or home school must adhere to the following guidelines regarding extracurricular activities and academic eligibility:

  • Complete a “Declaration of Eligibility Form”OR
  • Name of 4-H member must appear on a list of eligible students to participate in a specific extracurricular activity signed by the school principal or designee. Age Divisions:                                                  Junior – 8 years old & in the 3rd grade through 5th grade                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Intermediate – 6th grade through 8th grade                     Senior – 9th grade through 12th gradeRegistration: Registration will open March 2nd and close at midnight April 3rd.  NO late entries – NO exceptions. 

    NO limit on number of teams or individuals a county may enter.  If the county has multiple teams, please denote team names on 4-H Connect using this structure:  (County Name) Jr./Int./Sr. Team #1 – – – – Bowie Junior Team #1

    ALL county packets must be picked up by the County Extension Agent, Coach or other adult representative at one time.  Once information sheet is completed the county representative will return it to the check-in table.

    Auxiliary Aids or Special Accommodations:  if you need any type of auxiliary aid or special accommodation to participate in this program or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact the district office at 972-952-9201 at time of entry or no later than two (2) weeks prior to the program or note such needs when registering on 4-H Connect.

    Members per Team:  Teams consist of 3 or 4 members of the same age.  Junior members will be allowed to move up to compete in the intermediate age division in order to complete a team.  Juniors nor Intermediates are not allowed to move up to the senior age division.  Only the top 3 individual scores on a team will count toward the team total.

    Awards:  Rosettes will be awarded for 1st through 5th place for individual and teams in each age category in each division (beef, lamb/goat, swine and reasons).  Buckles will be awarded to the overall high individual in each age division.  Buckles are sponsored by Collin County Farm Bureau.  (additional awards may be presented depending upon donor support)

    ONLY the top 3 SENIOR teams and top 3 SENIOR individuals (if not part of a team) qualify for state.  

 

Description/Objectives:

  • To increase knowledge of livestock evaluation and selection techniques
  • To better understand breeding concepts and use of analytical tools such as EPDs
  • To employ decision making skills
  • To create a sense of teamwork
  • To learn to make individual decisions and support them with oral statements
  • Classes – subject to change
    • 2 Market Steer
    • 1 Breeding Cattle
    • 1 Goat
    • 1 Market Lamb
    • 1 Breeding Lamb
    • 2 Market Swine
  • Reasons 
    • Seniors – 4 sets of reasons: 2 cattle, 1 sheep, 1 swine
    • Intermediates – 2 sets of reasons:  1 market steer, 1 market sheep
    • Junior – NO reasons
  • EPDs – Estimated Progeny Differences and a herd use description will be provided on the breeding cattle class.
