CONTEST INFORMATION.

 

The District IV 4-H Leaders 4 Life Contest will consist 3 portions for Senior teams. Junior/Intermediate Teams will only participate in the first 2 portions of the contest.

  • Parliamentary Procedure Demonstration: Teams will have 20 minutes to present a mock 4-H club meeting. Each team will be given a meeting agenda and three problems to incorporate into its presentation. The maximum score is 100 points.

 

  • Question-and-Answer Session: The teams will be asked 10 questions about parliamentary procedure. Each team member will answer one question. Teams will determine who will answer the remaining  Each team member may answer no more than three questions. The maximum score is 100 points.

 

  • Service Learning Interview (Senior Teams Only): Each team will submit a simple document (not judged) that includes the name of a project that was conducted during the year. The document will include the project name and three or four sentences describing the project. The judges will ask the team about the project and its use of the eight steps of service learning (outlined on page 6 of the Use Your Hands … For Servicedocument). The maximum score is 70 points.

 Schedule.The District IV 4-H Leaders 4 Life Contest will take place on Saturday, May 2nd at Texas A&M Commerce.

Registration.Each participating member is required to register on 4-H Connect and pay the district $10.00 contest registration fee.  Registration will open March 6 and will close at midnight on April 11, 2020. No late registration allowed.

 Location. The District IV 4-H Leaders 4 Life Contest will be held at Texas A&M Commerce in the Student Center. 

 Participation.Participants must be active 4-H members enrolled in a Texas 4-H Youth Development county program in District IV.

 Age.Age divisions are determined by a participant’s grade as of September 1 of the current 4-H year.  Age divisions for this contest are:

  • Junior/Intermediate – Grades 3 – 8
  • Senior – Grades 9 – 12

 Entries per county. Each county may enter as many teams as they choose.

Members per team. Each team will have at least four and no more than six members. Team members must represent the following officer positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer (at a minimum). Up to two additional team members can be in any position—such as reporter or recreation leader—or just act as members of the club. Officer positions are determined by the team in advance. 

Contest categories/divisions.  There will be two contest components for district (no interpretation piece required at district for junior/intermediate teams):

  • Parliamentary Procedure Demonstration:
    • Junior/Intermediate Team required procedures: Main Motion, Amendment, Refer to a Committee, and Division
    • Senior Team required procedures: Refer to the Leaders 4 Life State Guidelines
  • Questions and Answers with the Judges
  • Senior Teams Only: Service Learning Interpretation Piece and Service Learning Interview

 

Awards.  The top five high scoring teams in each age division will be recognized with awards.  The first, second, and third placed team in the senior age division will qualify for state.

 Cell phones and talking.  Cell phones or other digital devices are not allowed in any portion of the contest.  Contestants are encouraged to leave their phones with their parents or coach.  Once the contest orientation has been given, no talking will be allowed, except in contest rooms.  Each infraction of this rule will result in the team losing 5 points from the total team score.
